Round 7 Wrap Up

ROUNDS REAL ESTATE REPORT:-

B reserve took on Lyndhurst at their pristine home facilities this weekend. The girls felt like royalty with their own private changing rooms and flawless courts. The game started slow, with Lyndhurst taking the lead in the first quarter due to their Goalers accurate shooting. In the second quarter the Yarras picked up the pace with Maggie on our side line to give us direction and by the end of the third quarter the scores were even. Unfortunately the Yarras lost the game in the last quarter due to some careless mistakes. Mary was awarded best on Court for her endless effort in defence and working the ball down the court. In a tough battle against an undefeated team, the Yarras held their own. Playing only their second game with this combination of players, the Yarras should not be underrated heading into the second half of the season.

B Grade have been putting together strong defensive efforts in matches this year and the attacking end has come together in a similar way to the final scene of ‘Dirty Dancing’ where Baby finally nails the lift, with Hannah, Mersina, Candice and Mad working together to provide a dominating 4 quarter performance. The Yarras showed great determination in being able to swing the momentum of the game back in our direction when we let it slip away for short periods of time. Hannah was awarded best on court for a flawless performance in goals where she built to shooting 85% in the final quarter. The final score was St Kilda City 40 to Yarras 64.

A Reserve saw some new faces join them for this week’s match against Caulfield. With some unavailabilities we saw Sheridan Krause and Tracey Edis fill-in for the Yarras. Firing out of the blocks, the Yarras were winning by 5 goals at quarter-time. Unfortunately the second quarter did not start as well, which saw the Yarras lose their lead to only winning by 2 goals at halftime. Brilliant defensive efforts from Bron Rees and Bec Eagleson. They capitalised on any loose balls, rebounds or simply dominated each contest. Further acknowledgement goes to Bec who worked tirelessly all game and saw her receive best on court. The Mid-courters, Gemma Mulqueen, Jess Porter and Tracey Edis played a good defensive game, picking off stray balls and providing many leads down the court. The Goalers, Sheridan Krause and Steph Craig played well together as a new combination, working hard throughout the game. The Yarras unfortunately could not hold onto their lead and went down by 9 goals; South Yarra 35 to Caufield 44

It was 3rd versus 4th in A Grade this weekend when the Yarras played against Caulfield. Despite a shaky start, the Yarras went into the second quarter with a 2 goal lead, capitalising on the many errors made by Caulfield. Unfortunately we lost our mojo in the second quarter and were unable to regain momentum for the remainder of the match. Whilst we lacked our usual determination and felt overrun on the court, the scoreboard reflected only a 3 goal deficit going into the last quarter. This was largely due to accurate goaling and strong leads from Hayley Becker, and a consistent level headed presence from Erin Price whom was too quick for her opponents. Erin Price was the recipient of best on court. Final scores; South Yarra 26 to Caulfield 39.

Our Thirds enjoyed the week’s rest in their bye.

The Reserves got the jump on the Lightening with four goals to one point in the opening quarter. Murphy and Fitzpatrick kicked goals from handball receives (who handballed it?), and Buckets also kicked two goals and one point. At this stage, bookies were beginning to payout bets. It was a competitive second quarter, with Lyndhurst kicking two goals to make it a fourteen point ball game at halftime. The Andrews Government isn’t happy with Waldron after using up the CFA’s funding to constantly put him out. Eddie had more space than Niel Armstrong in 1969. Smith directed play with his long kicking. The final quarter was very entertaining but not one for those suffering with heart conditions. Lyndhurst kicked the first two goals of the quarter to draw it to 30-36 and whilst they had momentum they kicked an extra two points which kept the Yarras in front by four points. It was a full court press and the Yarras struggled to get it past Lyndhurst’s zone defence. In the final minute of the game, the Yarras managed to get through their backline and then thankful to a Lyndhurst forty-metre kick closer to our goal, the Yarras managed to kick the final goal of the game ending any possible chance of a Lyndhurst win. Emanuel constantly took on the opposition and gave us plenty of drive forward. Kindred was the kindling that got the fire started. The mailman Malone was a fantastic addition to the ruck ranks. Final scores; 43-32.

The Yarras travelled to the wide expanses of Marriott Waters to take on Lyndhurst on a deck twice the size of the Den. The lightning started well getting a 3 goal jump with their forwards looking dangerous overhead. A 2 goal to 1, second quarter saw the lead cut to just 7 points at the main break. More importantly the Yarras looked to be taking control of the match. After a rousing halftime address from Coach, Daisy Stegehuis the lads came out firing with Brady kicking some lovely right foot goals. Macca moved to the ruck and was instrumental in getting the ball to Rusty and Scotty. This allowed Eamon to go forward leaving their defence in all sorts. The Yarras kicked 10 goals to 2 to run away 43 point victors showing the competition that we can win on a big ground and away from the Den.
