Round 8 Rounds Real Estate Wrap Up

13 Jun 2017 by Geoffrey Zach

The Yarras hosted Endeavour Hills in a Queen’s Birthday triple header special at the Den and won two out of three. In the words of Meat Loaf, “two out of three ain’t bad.”

The revolving door of the Third’s selection continued to revolve this week. I’ve seen fewer debutants at a deb ball, but none as nervous as Alex Otten who turned out for his first and long awaited game for the Yarras. Just like a deb ball, minutes in you could tell things were going to get ugly. Sean Dixon Lionel Messi’d the Yarras’ first goal and Alby Evans snagged two more to open up a 3 goal lead at the first break. Despite it being a fierce contest in close, the Yarras had far too much speed on the outside, as exemplified by Ash Evans who registered another “goal of the year” contender with a classy running goal. It was clear that Endeavour Hills had not been subjected to this type of intensity and pressure before and they responded in a manner outside the spirit of the game. However, the Yarras held their nerve and showed plenty of class to close out the game, recording an important 16 point win.

Buckets had the Reserves up and about early by taking two strong grabs up forward and converting to kick two goals. However, the Falcons were well disciplined in the midfield and repelled the football well from half back. Consequently, the Yarras’ defenders were under constant siege. Notwithstanding, Auto, Presland, Kev, Pirate and Bobo all played well in our backline. The Sherpa carried the Yarras in the midfield as he was dominate in the Ruck but had little support under his feet. Buckets was the Yarras’ major goal scorer, with three goals. Fitzpatrick kicked a remarkable goal, deep in the pocket on the boundary, 35 metres out, he kicked a banana whilst being cleaned up by a Falcon and is one that he will talk about for years to come. The Yarras weren’t good enough on the day, being defeated; 52 to 133.

The Seniors match promised to be a cracker with 4th placed Yarras coming up against 5th placed Endeavour Hills, the winner would get a jump on the chasing pack while the loser would find themselves falling back to the group. The Yarras had a fantastic first quarter with Maher being shown no respect on the back flank and streaming forward for 2 long goals and the lads jumping out to a 19 point advantage. Knowing what was on the line, the Falcons came back strong in the second quarter and went into the long break only 10 points down and soaring with their heads up. Tony kept the Falcon’s biggest and most dangerous forward to barely a touch in the second half. The forward line didn’t have a standout goal kicker but a very pleasing spread across the group and as always the midfield were ferocious in their attack on the ball. The Yarras led by 9 points at the final break. The last quarter was a tight affair with the defence only allowing a goal while the Yarras kicked 2 to win by 17 points.

Ladies’ Day is on Saturday 24th June. Tickets are $25 per person and we’d love for you to bring along a guest.
