Round 9 Bendigo Bank Wrap Up

19 Jun 2017 by Geoffrey Zach

Ladies’ Day is this Saturday, 24th June. Tickets are $25 per person and we’d love for you to bring a guest.

B Reserve met Mordialloc this week with some fresh faces. We welcomed back 2016 premiership player, Ruby, and Harriet made her debut for the Yarras, playing her “warmest” game of netball in the Melbourne winter sun. The team found their positions and despite the difference in ladder positions, demonstrated that they are a competitive side and with a bit more training and time to gel they will make their comeback. Harriet proved to be handy down in defence with her endless intercepts and drives down the court. Best on Court was Hannah Bevis who demonstrated her diversity by succeeding both in goals and on the wing, working tirelessly to drive for the ball despite having close attention paid to her by two opposition defenders. Final scores; Mordialloc 38 to Yarras 17.

B grade celebrated their third win of the season, which was a story of amazing teamwork and skill triumphing over tragedy. Our team stayed strong and calm, displaying the definition of sportsmanship over an increasingly rough team. Like the Bardon Bellas, once we found our groove last game the Yarras were unstoppable with a confident win over Lyndale. An amazing effort by Zaita (as usual!) was devastatingly cut short with a knee injury shortly into the third quarter, but the team stayed strong whilst playing short until our only hope, ‘Obi Han Bevis-Obi’, came to our rescue. Best on court was Mersina who delivered an amazing game in Goal Attack with fantastic positions and accuracy helping the Yarras secure a 46 to 22 win, with an honourable mention to Laura, whose intercepts and quick hands were magic creating turnovers all down the court.

A Reserve hit the court with a new look team this week with Sam and Kerry joining the team with a number of the Lionesses enjoying some holiday sunshine. It was a tough start to the game with the Dingley goal shooter a towering figure and very difficult to stop. The defenders persevered well and did a great job in difficult circumstances. The attacking end had their best game of the year so far with great connections into the circle. A tough game got even tougher when Jess Porter hit the deck and severely damaged her arm. A really gallant effort by the girls this week, the team are really close to securing our next win – I can just feel it! South Yarra 36 were defeated by Dingley 57.

A Grade played a rematch from round 1. The Yarras set out to showcase their improvement this season. Unfortunately a shaky warm-up led to a less than optimal start, going into the second quarter 3 goals down. This was quickly rectified to put the game firmly in our favour. For a battle between 4th and 5th, and a team we had previously lost to, the Lionesses prowess completely overpowered their opposition to take the win, and look solid for a finals berth later this year. Hayley Becker was outstanding, scoring a huge 32 goals of the team’s total 42. Steph O’Dea, Jess Buerckner and Erin Price worked hard to break their opponents’ defensive press, providing multiple scoring opportunities. In the third quarter Steph, H, Jess, Ez and Mags outwit, outplayed, outlasted and outscored St Kilda City 14 to 5, leaving Hoges and Luce jobless. This earned Steph O’Dea our best on Court with special mentions to Jess Buerckner. South Yarra 42 defeated St Kilda City 31.

The Thirds played a newly formed Lyndhurst team at the Den. The game was a low scoring and scrappy with the Lightning in the lead at halftime. Coach Dallas gave the boys a spray but it wasn’t to be as they lost by 5 after scoring a few late goals. Better players were Ash Evans, Ryan Wise and Roddy.

The Reserves played Lyndale at Barry Powell Reserve where 78% of the scoring was done at the Bakers Road end of the ground in which the Yarras were kicking to in the final term. Frisbee was tremendous and contributed two goals. Angeloni kicked a lovey goal by collecting a crumb and kicking a right foot snap over his shoulder. Stevens-Hunt was savagely fierce in the forward line by submitting ferocious tackling pressure. Pereira, Presland and Rossi were magnificent in the backline. Mick Bohan won most taps in the ruck and dominated around the ground. Pearse had more possessions than a drug mule. The game was in the balance in the final minutes of the game when a switch of play conducted by Klomp sent W. Smith from the half backline down the wing with more bounces than a basketball, into the forward line and set up the winning goal. The Reserves game was tighter than the Bill Cosby trial but a winner was decided. The Yarras were up by three points at the final siren but Lange kicked another goal (his third for the day) after the siren to have the Yarras win by nine.

The Seniors took on Lyndale on what was a great day for footy. Contests between the two sides have always been tough and close games and this promised to be no different. As has happened in the last couple of away games the lads started slowly finding it hard to cut through the Pumas defensive structures and attack on the ball. At quarter time the Yarras were down 24 to 1, the second was all South Yarra kicking 4.4 to 1.3 to head into halftime only 2 points down. Goals were extremely hard to come by in the second half with both defences solid. Rogers and Russell kept the Coleman leader to donuts. Keki and Adam found some rare time and space. There was only a point in it at 3 quarter time. The Yarras took the most of their chances in the last quarter, kicking 2 straight to Lyndale’s 1.2 to come away with a great 3 point victory. The win moves the Yarras to 3rd on the ladder.
