Round 10 Merchant Electrical Wrap Up

26 Jun 2017 by Geoffrey Zach

B reserve played against Dingley this round, making it the third game in a row playing a top four side. Having all the girls back in the side allowed their team work to be put on show. In what was always going to be a tough battle, the Yarras kept up, being down by only three goals at half time. The attackers were cool, calm and collected moving the ball into the goal circle. Ros provided tireless drives and feeds to the shooters. Mary earned best on court for her role in defence, finally mastering the use of angles Maggie talks about so often to gain countless intercepts and turnovers. Unfortunately, Dingley came out firing in the second half and the Yarras couldn’t keep up. Despite the end result, the Lionesses should hold their heads high. Final scores; Dingley 38 to South Yarra 16.

This week B Grade played against Hallam. It was a rocky start with the girls being down by 2 goals at the quarter-time break. The momentum shifted in the 2nd quarter with Kat and Harriet building an impenetrable wall of defence, perhaps a certain orange president should get some tips from them. The attacking end built on connections, as the game continued. The team showed great determination to hold onto a lead and eventually win by 2 goals. Best on court went to Mad for feeding the circle effectively. If only she fed herself effectively on Ladies’ day and she would not have been in a world of pain on Sunday.

A Reserve took on Blackrock with what started out to be an even, goal for goal match. With another week of a ‘new look’ side, we welcomed 2 new girls into the Yarras dresses for the 2017 season. Huge thankyou to Ali Neil and Sarah Corrigan for filling the gaps! The girls worked hard and consistently, pegging away at the Blackrock Jets who started to tire late in the game. Congratulations to Carrie James who shot accurately, worked tirelessly and kept her player very quiet when the ball was turned over, this earnt her best on court this week. Unfortunately, the Lionesses channelled their inner Bombers, losing their lead in the last quarter to go down by 1 goal. 32-31 Blackrock.

A Grade netball enjoyed the bye and partied hard at Ladies’ Day.

A stacked Skye side was the task for the Third’s this week. Despite the return of fan favourites Kim Bratzel after his Sydney sabbatical and Borgy, the team was missing a lot of key personnel due to their frisbee commitments. Syke arrived at Fritsch Holzer earlier than they did for their numerous court appearances, so you knew they meant business. However, the Yarras still got the jump on them, thanks to a spectacular goal from Hayden. Jarryd Mills was brave by taking some great marks running back with the flight of the ball. The contest was evenly matched for most of the day, with the exception of the 2nd quarter, where Skye got on top of things, kicking 5 unanswered goals. Despite the loss, there was a lot to like about the Yarras’ performance. They uncovered another player, Brook who had a stat line the envy of Garry Ablett Jnr including two chase down tackles and goals in the last quarter. However, it wasn’t to be for the Yarras eventually going down by 5 goals.

The Reserves played against ninth placed CPL. In accurate goal kicking kept the visiting Lions in the game the whole day. Including kicking a disgusting 2 goals and 7 points in the first quarter. Bad kicking is bad football, and it showed. Ghasperidis was a standout in his debut match. Belfrage was welcomed back from the Mexican sun and put on a great display in the ruck however, what you didn’t see was his endless work off the ball. Pereira and Presland were magnificent in the backline. Rossi’s reach in every marking contest was longer than Rapunzel’s hair allowing him to take an innumerable amount of contested marks in the backline. The Yarras had six separate goal scorers, Khoury, Lange, Moroney, Stevens-Hunt, Scarlo, and Lloyd. The Yarras were very lucky to win. The scores were even with seconds remaining in the game and the Yarras were the beneficiary of some undisciplined behaviour from CPL’s captain to give the Yarras a free kick in front of goals allowing them a goal and the win. Final Scores; South Yarra 6-14-50 defeated CPL 7-2-44.

The Senior side set the target of 20 goals at our fortress, against a struggling CPL outfit. To have ten goal kickers achieve this target (and one of those not be Taz) was almost unforeseeable. As usual, Eamon worked tirelessly in the ruck, chopped out ably by Macca, the former rewarded with a couple of great goals after some wayward shots. A new look Department of Defence, comprising of usual mid/forwards Dirty Harry and Larry Bird saw a bit of the ball but repelled almost everything with relative ease, fleet footed pace and neat skills. Even the Big 25 went on a couple of runs with the ball safely tucked under his big, strong arms. Scott had his usual 32 HBGs and was invaluable in the middle. A couple of undisciplined free kicks saw CPL frustratingly almost double their score in the last quarter though we held steadied to win comfortably. The Toms up forward were great targets and one can’t ever understate the handy contribution of the Italian Stallion, Villella, fresh off sausage making day with 25 touches at 85% efficiency and three sausages of his own. Final scores; Yarras 20-18-138 defeated CPL 6-7-43

We look forward to a tough hit out in all three football grades at Hallam this week! Hallam are top of the table in both the Seniors and Reserves, and equal on points with the Yarras in the Thirds grade.

Big thank you to all those that attended and helped out on Ladies’ Day. It was a very successful day for the club. Thank you to Jessica Buerckner and Rachel Vannucci for making it such a fun day.
