Round 14 Simply Health Wrap Up

24 Jul 2017 by Geoffrey Zach

The Simply Health Report:

The day of the South Yarra ball brought some fresh faces to B Reserves. After recruiting half of the Bodger clan, our side welcomed Bianca and Shelley to the team. In incredibly windy conditions, the girls were eager to replicate their win against Black Rock at the beginning of the season. The shooters worked hard under the ring, sinking goals from left, right and centre. Hannah’s use of space, accurate goaling and tireless leads earned her a very well deserved best on. Mary got a special mention for picking off loose passes and turning over inaccurate shots. South Yarra just had too much momentum for BlackRock, winning by a comfortable 11 goals. South Yarra 31 defeated Black Rock 20.

B grade took on a rather lacklustre Glen Waverley. The Yarras where able to move the ball around the court with ease in a similar manner to the Mighty Duck’s Flying V. It was a great team effort with everyone playing their part. Best on court was Candice, for her outstanding defensive efforts and multiple intercepts. Julie also had a great game playing up a grade this week. We tried different combinations, with Kat having a run in the attacking end. A big thanks to Ruby Riley for filling in this week. It was like having Maggie out on the court giving us instructions. Overall a low key game with a great outcome. Yarras 58 defeated Glen Waverley 16.

A Reserve ran into a red hot Heatherton White team on Saturday. The Yarras had a good start to the game, being down by 6 goals after the first quarter. The Yarras were then over ran by an experienced, fast ball moving and physical, Heatherton team. The girls kept pushing and trying really hard with some good opportunities being provided by our defenders, Rebecca, Ali, Laura and Gem. The attacking end was a new look and had some good passages of play during the game. Huge thank you to Kim and Shelley for filling in for the team and really fitting in nicely. Best on court this week went to the ever reliable, positive and hardworking Gemma. A huge effort through the midcourt in a tough game and on a tough opponent. The final scores; Heatherton White 40 defeated South Yarra 12.

It was a hard day at the office for A grade, with not only playing the very impressive top of the table Heatherton but in blizzard like conditions! With captain, Sarah Hogan away, Jules Woiwod in her Greek glowing tan glory was very impressive working well in defence with Lucy Renshaw, and slotting into goals in the last quarter, landing her best on court! Going up against a very tall shooter, Rebecca Eagleton stepped into Goal Keeper in the second half, never giving up trying to get a turn over! The whole team did very well to stay positive throughout the game despite the score line. The final scores were Heatherton 62 defeated Yarras 22. We will now regroup and get ready for a strong last two games before heading into finals.

In gale force winds, the Thirds took on arch nemesis, BlackRock. After smashing them earlier in the year, it was clear that the Yarras were out for a repeat of the dose. In the absence of captain, Will Quince, Ky stepped up in the ruck and performed admirably. Alby and Brook continued on their merry way, picking up possessions at will. “Hitman” Higgo returned for his first game for the club this year and showed glimpses of his best, however, the wind hampered his kicking somewhat. The defence held up well, with everyone playing their role, the final score was flattering for Black Rock; Jets 26 were defeated by South Yarra 64.

After a tumultuous week, the Reserves needed to win the four premiership points against second on the ladder to stay in touch with the final five teams in the competition. The Yarras had a magnificent start, kicking 3-6 in the opening term whilst the backline kept BlackRock to just one goal straight. The Yarras didn’t let it slip, winning the second quarter as well. Whilst the Third quarter was a struggle. Belfrage dominated in the ruck and was even better around the ground. He was an absolute standout as best on ground for both sides. In the final quarter, Jewell took on 3 defenders, then handballed it to I’anson alone in the goal square to set up the debutant for a goal and the sealer. Smith’s speed from on the half forward line was valuable, he also kicked two goals. Lange continued his goal kicking form with another two goals. Wyatt had plenty of space on the wings, and his pin point skills despite the heavy winds set up the Yarras going forward. The defenders were outstanding by keeping their opponents quiet. The Yarras were victorious by 20 points. The win had Willard Lloyd doing backflips. The ladder is now very tight, with only four points separating second and sixth positions which will make for a very interesting final four matches of the season.

The seniors took on an inform Blackrock team away. The game didnt start well with the home team adjusting to the windy conditions far quicker and jumping out to a 27 point lead at the first break. The damage was done with the lead remaining around that margin for the remainder of the day. The usual crew in the middle tried all day but a few to many passengers left they Yarras wanting. If the seniors are serious about playing finals they must bounce back this weekend.
