The Simply Health Round 15 Wrap Up

1 Aug 2017 by Geoffrey Zach

In scenes reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz tornado scene, the Yarras lost in all their netball matches, however, the Reserves and Seniors had wins over Moorabbin.

B grade took on Dingley and welcomed Annie and the trainer, Gabby who both worked well in the combinations considering it was their first run with the team. Once again it was a strong defensive effort from the Yarras with their effort and the horrendous wind creating lots of turnovers. In a day that made all goalers want to click their red shoes and long for home, Mersina still managed to score some long bombs. Kristal took one for the team, playing against the wicked witch for the last half and showed us all that we should stay on her good side. Laura took best on court once again, for her tireless effort in defense. Hopefully the B grade team can come together for a win for the last game next week. Congratulations to Candice for her first game as captain. Final scores; Yarras 14 Dingley 37.

With a late team change, B Reserves met an equal opponent in Caulfield on Saturday. Welcoming Fatimah to the team, the Yarras were challenged with the wind and strong opponents. Unable to gel in the first quarter, the Yarras were kept goalless. Unfortunately this set the tone for the match. With key players in the team working hard to try and convert, Roslyn stood above the rest creating turnovers and intercepts down the length of the court. Her high energy level of play earned her a well-deserved best on court. The girls were unable to stage a comeback, finishing the match very sore after being sent to the deck throughout the game. The girls are hoping to rally and lift heading into their last game of the season. Final scores; Caulfield 21 v South Yarra 4.

In incredibly blusterous conditions, A Reserve took on Dingley. With many new combinations in the team due to injury, the girls did well keeping consistent throughout the day. Huge thanks to Bec Eagleson for stepping up into captaincy this week! In what turned out to be a tough game to score any goals due to the wind, the girls did well, keeping their cool and moving the ball short and sharp reducing the opportunity for turnovers. As always, our mid-courters, Gem, Mad & Kerry showed determination to keep possession and fiercely chased after any loose balls. The shooters, Han & Sinead faced their own tough battle with the wind with a positive attitude and they worked well together considering they had never played together before. Our amazing defenders, Bron and Bec never gave up and worked hard all day. A well-deserved best on went to Bec for her consistency and determination. Unfortunately the girls couldn’t fly away with a win this week, Dingley 13 to Yarras 6.

In what was a dress rehearsal for the A Grade elimination finals in a fortnight, Caulfield psychologically dominated this week’s match against a lack lustre South Yarra side. The skills and possession of the ball was there for most of the game making a win attainable. In the harsh conditions, it was great to see adjusted moves from the get go, and equal opportunities to our opposition. Based on skill, South Yarra have a real chance to make their finals series a long one! Let’s hope this flat spirit is the calm before the storm, and we get back to team lifting fun filled ferocity! Best on this week went to an ever present, hard working, key contributor Erin Price. Final scores; Caulfield 19 South Yarra 13.

Despite the loss, A Grade netballers, have now cemented fourth position and will play finals in 2017. Congratulations Ladies!

Keysborough forfeited to our dominate Thirds. The Thirds have also secured a finals position and are currently sitting fourth.

The Reserves needed a win over Moorabbin to attain third position on the ladder. A strong gale across the ground challenged any team from scoring easily and kept the boundary umpires gainfully employed. The Yarras had ten different goal kickers, including debutant, Patrick Johnson and backmen, Ingham and Auto. Matheson and Frisbee kicked two each. Zach was the major goal kicker with three. Auto directed the play with his voice and was instrumental in switching the play to open the game up. The Yarras won easily in very difficult conditions; 14-16-100 to the Roos 1-2-8.

The Yarras’ Senior side looked to atone for a slip-up against Moorabbin at their ground earlier in the season. They also wanted to celebrate veteran Cory Brady’s 200 games in style. For the first three-quarters this proved difficult, with both sides engaging in an arm wrestle of sorts exchanging goals on a very breezy day. A lack of desire was evident as the boys trailed by a point, this was remedied by a rev-up from coach Daisy at three-quarter time. A completely new South Yarra side seemed to emerge from the huddle and finally flicked the switch in the last quarter in front of a big home crowd for Cory’s big day. We converted nearly nearly every opportunity to pile on 8 goals in the last to the Roos’ solitary behind. Dan Russell ended with three goals from four kicks, in true Cory style, the goals were peppered and two went through for majors. Other multiple goal scorers were Eamon, Ardern and Keke. Rusty was great in the middle and lead from the front yet again. Cory was carried off the Den to the applause of friends and family, he looks forward to game 250. Hopefully we can finish off with three wins from our last three games, all starting with Ashwood this week, away.

Our past players day is on 12th August followed by a social event in the evening at the Den!
