Hunter Industrials Elimination Final Wrap Up

29 Aug 2017 by Geoffrey Zach

The Hunter Industrials Report:

The Thirds had a good win in a practice run heading into finals whilst the Reserves competed in horrible conditions in their elimination final.

In their final game of the home & away season the Thirds came up against fellow finalists Hallam, in what was essentially a dead rubber for both sides. Coming into the finals, however meant that neither side wanted to disrupt their good form. Brock got out of the blocks early kicking a couple of goals, before Hallam hit back with a few of their own. It was an arm wrestle for most of the day, however you always felt that South Yarra would prevail, which they did by 8 points. There were once again plenty of contributors for the Yarras, with Higgo looking particularly ominous up forward. The Third’s will now shift their focus to Cerberus and their qualifying final next week.

The Reserves elimination final was played in conditions fit for a White Walker (Game of Thrones characters). It was extremely cold, windy and rained most of the game. Unfortunately, Black Rock got the jump on the Yarras early, kicking the only goal of the opening quarter. Whereas the Yarras were sluggish and didn’t make the most of their opportunities, kicking two behinds. Khoury presented well in the forward line. Despite the Yarras having the wind in the second, Black Rock consolidated their win kicking two goals and leaving the Yarras goalless in the opening half. It is always a tough challenge to win a game without scoring a goal in the first half. The Yarras came out harder and fiercer in the third quarter, and they began to win contests around the ground despite the hail. Lange took three spectacular one handed marks whilst being held by his opponent. Ghasperidis was industrious in every contest and was well aided by Belfrage’s dominate ruck work despite him being infringed all day. Mwaba’s left boot got a heavy work out with more disposals than a garbage collector. In the forward line, Buckets took marks as if it were a dry game and he was conducting an Auskick clinic. He was the Yarras solitary goal kicker with two goals. The Yarras backline kept the Jets to only two behinds in the final half. Although, it was too little, too late. The match was played very scrappy with limited goals kicked all game with less goals kicked than the first ever FIFA World Cup Final; the final scores, Black Rock 3-6-24 to South Yarras 2-3-15.

Big thanks to Patrick Tuck for coaching the Reserves over the past two years and getting the boys to the finals in both years. Patrick will be stepping down as the Reserves’ coach but will continue to be an assistant coach in the Seniors. We are excited to announce that Darren ‘Daisy’ Stegehuis has committed to coaching the Senior football team in 2018.

The Yarras are now seeking expressions of interest for the Reserves and Thirds coaching positions for the 2018 season. If you would like to apply for either position, please email your interest to southyarrafc@gmail.com.
